Barcelona Open: Nadal beats Thiem to win 10th title

Rafael Nadal celebrates his victory against Dominic Thiem of Austria.

Rafael Nadal has clinched the Barcelona Open for a 10th time after thrashing Dominic Thiem of Austria in straight sets.

The Austrian who had overcome world No. 1 Andy Murray on his way to the final, gave Nadal a stiff challenge for much of the first set, but the Spaniard stole the show after his first break and went on to take the opener 6-4.

Nadal’s mastery of the clay courts, however, told for real in the second when he took full advantage of his slicing backhand, which gave Thiem no chance of a response whatsoever before the 14-time Grand Slam champion cruised to grab the second set 6-1. This has been Nadal’s second title of the season and 71st of his career.
