Donegal tourism special on Nationwide

Donegal tourism special on Nationwide

Several tourist attractions around the county will feature in this evening’s Nationwide on RTE.

This special programme on Donegal tourism was recorded over the last year in a number of locations.

Among the features is a report on the old Bundoran railway by Eileen Magnier.

According to the RTE website: “The people of Bundoran recently took a sentimental journey down memory lane when they marked the 60th anniversary of the last train out of the town.  The Bundoran Express had played a huge part in the life of the town for over 90 years. But a combination of factors saw it make its final journey on the 30th September 1957.”

The Folk Village at Glencolmcille which marked in 50th anniversary in 2017 also features.

“2017 was a big year for the people of Glencolmcille in South West Donegal with it marking the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of its famous folk village and the thirtieth anniversary of the man whose brain child it was,” reads the RTE programme listing.

“The pioneering Fr James McDyer recognised the important part tourism could play in revitalising rural Ireland and in particular, Glencolmcille which had been ravaged by emigration.”

People don’t necessarily think of visiting gardens when planning a trip to Donegal. But Brian McVeigh’s report shows that the county’s Garden Trail is worthy of attention.

Boost

The popular Nationwide programme reaches a huge audience. This programme will reach many people at a time when they plan holidays and short breaks for the year ahead. It should therefore be a welcome boost to tourism in the county.

The show airs at 7.00pm this evening, Friday, January 12 on RTE 1.
