Etihad Airways continues sustainable drive

  eTN Article:

Etihad Airways, the national air travel of the United Arab Emirates, provides continued to make improvements in the gasoline efficiency of its fleet, resulting in considerable reductions in carbon dioxide emissions plus reinforcing the sustainability credentials from the airline.

The airline’ s i9000 dedicated fuel efficiency team went numerous initiatives across all functional functions of the business, saving more than 60, 000 tonnes of gasoline. This 2 . 5% improvement throughout 2016 amounts to nearly 190, 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide cost savings, the equivalent of 1, 200 flights among Abu Dhabi and London or maybe the removal of over 40, 000 vehicles from the road.

Fuel intake is influenced by many factors like the aircraft and engine type, the being carried and the duration from the flight. The airline is focusing on several key initiatives to optimize efficiency, both with the aircraft by itself and through external collaboration along with aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing plus Airbus.

Richard Hill, Chief Procedures Officer for Etihad Airways, stated: “ Fuel optimisation is a best agenda item for any successful plus sustainable airline, with Etihad Air passage no exception. There have been some encouraging outcomes during 2016 and I’ mirielle delighted to see so many of our fliers fully engaged with the programme, that has ensured additional learning possibilities and the identification of new measures that may deliver greater fuel savings within the years ahead. It’ s an essential part of our sustainability efforts and we’ll continue to look for ways to improve the performance. ”

Reducing bodyweight can be a vital part of fuel financial savings, with aircraft such as the A380 working with a maximum take-off weight of 575 tonnes, equivalent to 115 African elephants or 218 Toyota Land Cruising motorcycles.   The airline has made the conscientious effort to reduce the weight associated with on-board items.   A ‘ weight out’ programme, which led to the removal or replacement of aboard items, led to a fuel burn off reduction of 1, 100 tonnes associated with fuel per year.

Weather performs a part in influencing aircraft gasoline efficiency. The airline is purchasing new technology such as the ‘ Boeing Breeze Uplink’ scheme to ensure that flight deck hands have the latest information on weather styles, allowing them to plan for the optimum gas performance of their aircraft during airline flight. Fuel burn performance is adversely impacted by seasonal fog, requiring extra holding fuel to be carried, incoming to Abu Dhabi and the flight is now collaborating with the Masdar Start of Science and Technology within Abu Dhabi to enable more accurate haze predictions.

Internally, continuous testimonials to holding fuel policy have got allowed for more accurate calculation associated with additional fuel requirements, using previous data to ensure adequate additional energy requirements are met.   Airport terminal staff are also supporting efforts to make sure that ground power is used instead of the additional power unit when aircraft take the ground. These and many other initiatives have got led to the positive results delivered up to now with different areas of the business such as Anatomist, Airports and Guest Experience trying to identify new areas where additional financial savings can be delivered.

The environmental advantages are not only substantial but the efficiency enhancement in 2016 compared to 2015 surpasses the emissions reduction goal the industry has set itself, presently a 1 . 5% efficiency enhancement across international aviation. By heading beyond this Etihad Airways can also be contributing to carbon neutral growth focuses on and the ultimate long term goal – for emissions to be fifty percent associated with 2005 levels by 2050.
