Holiday from hell couple blast travel firm after ‘horrendous’ room with a view looked out onto noisy building site

Elaine Townsend planned a relaxing break in the sun with her partner to celebrate him turning 60.

She and Jim Miller paid £1550 to fly to Costa Adeje, Tenerife, for a week.

But instead of enjoying the peace and quiet, they ended up next to a building site.

Elaine, 57, said: “The noise was incessant. The hotel right next to ours was being completely refurbished.

“It was an empty concrete shell.

“The noise of diggers and drilling went on from dawn until dusk, except when the workers took a siesta.

“It was horrendous. Our holiday was ruined.”

The couple booked with Thomson and flew from Glasgow on July 2.

But Elaine, of Crieff, Perthshire, said: “About 10 days before, Thomson sent an email advising that some work was going on at a hotel adjacent to us.

“We were staying at the Bahia Princess but the Iberostar Torviscas Playa was the complex being renovated.

“We went to the Thomson shop in Perth and spoke to staff there for advice.

“They told us the work was likely to be light refurbishment – doors, windows and possibly air conditioning units – but couldn’t tell us more than that.”

The couple could pay £500 to move to another similar hotel or £1500 for an upgrade. Elaine, a dispensing assistant, said: “The price was prohibitive so we decided we had no option but to go with the Bahia.”

She and Jim, a ornamental blacksmith, arrived in the resort at 11pm, when all was quiet. But the next morning they woke to the rammy from a full-blown building site.

Elaine said: “We complained at reception and spoke to the Thomson rep.

“A room move was no good as the noise impacted on the majority of our hotel. We had to like it or lump it. Let’s just say we went out all the time.”

When she returned home, Elaine complained to Thomson. She said: “Staff at the shop said we had to log our ­grievance online.

“They also said other holidaymakers in our position had been offered a transfer to another resort free of charge. I was furious.”

But Thomson got back to her to say they wouldn’t refund a penny. Elaine said: “They claimed they’d told us the work at the Iberostar was a full refurbishment, which is absolute rubbish.

“They also said there was no obligation on their part to inform us at all which shocked me.

“They claimed to have offered alternatives which they did.

“What they failed to mention was that this was at further cost to Jim and I and we weren’t prepared to pay.

“Thomson are being economical with the truth and that’s putting it politely. Please help.”

I got on to Thomson, who have offered £750. They said: “We are sorry to hear of Ms Townsend’s experience.

“We closely monitor progress of work at hotels we operate to. Situations like this are rare.”
