At the start from the International Year of Sustainable Travel and leisure for Development I want to pose the seemingly ridiculous question – “ Can you have too much of a good thing”?
The particular Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remain as one of the greatest achievements of our period – the culmination of more than fifty percent a century of increasing collective dedication to a fairer more equitable entire world, based on economic, social and environment sustainability. An evolving, 15 12 months, locally led framework of seventeen global SDGs, with 169 goals and 304 Indicators that contact information every aspect of life and the planet.
The SDGs have been intelligently designed to galvanize regional, national, plus local stakeholders to make their own reactions – for air, oceans, property, cities, industries, rural communities, native people etc . Each with their very own vision of the priorities, and edition of the action needed. That means trillions of personal, corporate, NGO and federal government actions must start changing all around the planet: each calibrated to its very own circumstance, ambition, and pace associated with change . Eventually it will transform all production, intake, and investment.
I would argue however , that one of such 17 Goals stands out from the relaxation – namely Goal 13 Climate Modify – and for the simple reason that it can be existential . Existential means that existence on the planet is fundamentally threatened. Without a fix, future generations will certainly freeze or fry. And the modern impacts of extreme climate may severely aggravate many other SDG problems. Which is why, the Paris Agreement using its 2050 national carbon reduction goals must be implemented now and increased every 5 years for several years.
For this year, primary of the world’ s largest commercial activity Travel & Tourism is going to be on how to link its sustainable advancement strategies with the SDGs. At the same time changing to the alignment that the rest of mankind is making, for moral, company and social reasons. We will see brand new conferences, declarations, indicators, and coalitions; engaging public, private and municipal society stakeholders. The entire year has been developed and constructed to intensify plus accelerate the Travel & Travel and leisure intersect with all the SDGs and the range and scale of the UN’ t IYSTD Resolution is massive. And rightly so – to become a real force for good, we have to become up with the mainstream curve upon building sustainability into all our own growth aspirations.
In fact it is here that my question gets to be clearer – how to keep electronic x istential Environment Resilience front and centre within our sector, in a year when Travel & Tourism sustainability is everyone’ h flavour of the month and exactly where all of humanity’ h agenda is shifting to all from the SDG s. And how to ensure, going forward, that our sectoral approach to environment response tracks the ever-increasing electronic x istential needs of the Paris accords , as well as bridging the spaces between national/ international, global/local, plus science/operational, that will be at the core of true change.
All of us believe SUN (a legacy system for Maurice Strong one of the excellent architects of Sustainable Development) can help, by its overall focus on the intersect of existential Climate Change with the response plus resilience of the Travel & Travel and leisure Sector.
After several years of planning, the particular proof of concept SUN Centre is going to be launched in 2017 in the Nationwide Park in Limburg, Belgium – supported by local community stakeholders. It’ s planned as the European center of a global network of prefabricated, solar powered, cloud connected centers – focused on community climate strength and travel.
You will have many aspects of the SUN experiment to create in place during 2017 – finding online data feeds, good exercise and innovation: building links using the local community – particularly schools exactly who we expect to be regular site visitors: as well as preparing for platform content curation, global network operations and the like.
Our core collaborators are multidisciplinary and global, with lifetimes associated with commitment to Sustainability, Mobility, Travel and leisure, Parks, Conservation and Infrastructure growth – inside and outside the industry – see www.thesunprogram.com
We are going to work, at Board level, to make sure closest integration with the Hoge Kempen National Park through its revolutionary environmentalist Director Ignace Schops who entrusted the Centre with us; as well as using the University of Hasselt Field Analysis Centre and its UNFCCC linked “ Ecotron” Climate Research Program. Ignace’ s vision as Leader of Europarc Federation will be an essential point of focus for us, their concept of “ Re-Connection, nature plus community together, as well as his durability links as a Goldman award champion, Ashoka Fellow, Gore Ambassador plus long-time IUCN member.
We will build on the relationship of SUNLIGHT co-founder Felix Dodds with the UN Eco friendly Development Goal Community, where he continues to be one of the key civil society designers – his recent book “ Negotiating the SDGs” sets out the vision of their potential impacts plus operations. Our collaboration goes back almost 2 decades, cemented by a distributed belief in the sustainable development beliefs of our friend and mentor Maurice Strong.
Ben Goldberg MBE , the Seat of the SUN-ARK company, former Mirielle. D. of global construction large Atlas Ward, will bring the essential aspect of prefabricated building, solar power plus efficient energy to our team. And am will reach out from my four decades of contacts in the industry with IATA, WTTC, UNWTO, WEF and now ICTP, to draw upon worldwide thinking in this field.
We are determined that this is a financially sustainable program and we understand that there are fellow believers who find both the business and moral significance of the multi-decade transformation. We want to build long term relationships, not simply marketing and advertising plays.
But a lot as I believe that the SUN system would have been an useful building block in the Climate Reaction of the “ Travelism” ecosystem, there is certainly still that nagging unanswered issue of keeping the focus on the electronic X istential component of climate resilience amidst all the optimistic vibes of the SDG and the Travel and leisure for Sustainable Development institutional passion of 2017.
For this reason, we will host a Strong Reflexion event in the fall of 2017 for the sole purpose of reviewing the intersect of existential Climate Change with the response plus resilience of the Travel & Travel and leisure Sector . It will coincide with all the inauguration of the Limburg SUN Center and will build on the experience of comparable events held in recent years – such as the IUCN led Strong Event before the Copenhagen COP.
We will also publish a brand new SUN “ Existential Blog” month-to-month, to prepare for this event and to increase awareness afterwards – it will include a wide range of views.
Last, but not least we are going to reflect this existential dimension in every our messaging, because if we don’ t act now and keep acting, 1 day soon it will be too late.
