As President Trump continues to evolve his travel ban, it is failing to make its intended difference in American security.
This is because a key element of the bans was to vet those wishing to enter the US more thoroughly. Extreme vetting is already the norm, however, as people who want to enter the country go through some of the most thorough background checks in the world.
Still, Trump keeps issuing new travel bans instead of focusing on bigger issues. Banning immigrants from terror-prone countries is one of the few campaign promises that Trump has attempted to follow through on, even though it keeps failing like the majority of his policies.
Since becoming president, Trump has issued three travel bans.
His first ban targeted Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. His second travel took Iraq off the list.
Federal courts partially or fully blocked the first two bans. Trump has since issued his third travel ban, which bans most citizens from Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad and North Korea, and to some extent Venezuela.
All of the countries on his latest travel ban, (besides North Korea and Venezuela) are Muslim majority.
Most people think the goal of all these travel bans is to stop terrorists from gaining entrance in the United States.
This, however, could not be further from the truth.
Trump is not doing this for our safety. He is doing this to single out a religion. If stopping terrorists from entering the country were truly the goal of the travel ban, then it would include Saudi Arabia, where many of the 9/11 terrorists were from.
People must stop pretending that this is not about religion. In the US, the biggest perpetrators of violence against Americans are not terrorists or foreigners but fellow Americans, the violence will continue.
In an article in Vox, Jennifer Williams points out, “Since Trump took office, more Americans have been killed by white American men with no connection to Islam than by Muslim terrorists or foreigners.”
Rather than issuing travel bans that do not work and tweeting about it, Trump should focus on fixing actual problems and lowering the crime rate here in America.
We must stop pretending these bans will do more good than harm because in the end, they only hurt people who choose to come to America with the hope of a better life. Unfortunately, perpetuating fear seems to be the only way Trump can get support.
