The entire world Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is trying to convert the UNWTO Global Program code of Ethics for Tourism straight into an international Convention, in order to increase the dedication of all stakeholders to its concepts. The process is being led by a good intergovernmental Working Group composed of associates of 36 UNWTO Member Declares.
While extremely appropriate for the tourism sector, the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics to get Tourism, adopted in 1999, represents the voluntary instrument whereas, the future Meeting on Tourism Ethics would make up a binding instrument.
“ For UNWTO to have its very first International Convention based on its foundation policy document would be of great importance, especially at a time when the uninterrupted development of international tourist arrivals offers reached a record of 1 . 2 billion dollars in 2016, doubling the statistics of tourism in 1999, year where the Global Code of Ethics has been adopted”, said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.
The Functioning Group on the UNWTO Convention upon Tourism Ethics discussed the text from the Draft Convention during two extreme working sessions in its second conference, held on 30-31 January 2017. The draft text will now end up being presented to the 105th session from the UNWTO Executive Council, to be kept on 11-12 May 2017 within Madrid, Spain. The Executive Authorities will then be followed by a third conference of the Working Group to which UNWTO Full and Associate Members are usually invited to participate.
Adopting the roadmap agreed by the Working Team, the Convention will be presented designed for consideration and possible adoption towards the 22nd UNWTO General Assembly, to happen in Chengdu, China, on 6 to 9 September 2017.
If authorized, the Convention would represent an essential step for UNWTO as a specific agency of the United Nations, as it will be the first international treaty of the Business. The adoption of the draft Tradition on Tourism Ethics this year will be particularly timely since 2017 continues to be declared by the United Nations as the Worldwide Year of Sustainable Tourism to get Development.
