10 women die in Chile nursing home blaze

Santiago, On Tuesday chile:ten women burned to death in a blaze at a Chilean nursing home, shocking the united states and prompting a call by President Sebastian Pinera to shake consciences over treatment of older people.
The tragedy revived debate in the South American country on the precarious situation faced by a large number of elderly who’ve seen their standard of living eroded by increased living costs and low pensions.
“I am hoping that tragic accident shall shake consciences and help us as a society to become more supportive, more affectionate, more welcoming to all or any our seniors.”
Authorities said the deadly fire broke out at dawn and quickly swept through the Santa Marta rest home in the southern commune of Chiguayante.
“We’ve 10 people dead, all women, who occupied dormitory number 2,” Biobio regional governor Jorge Ulloa told local media.
Ulloa said the victims were not able to flee the blaze since they were confined to bed. One individual who survived had been treated in a nearby health center.
The reason behind the fire continues to be being investigated.
Pinera traveled to the scene of the tragedy showing “solidarity and affection” with the relatives of the victims.
“I am hoping that tragic accident will shake consciences and help us as a society to become more supportive, more affectionate, more welcoming to all or any our seniors,” said Pinera.
The president said his government’s programme of social security reform that is to be rolled out in the coming weeks could have a section to “help older adults … in order that their families will keep them close”.
Authorities said security protocols at the others home have been followed and that older people residents was not locked inside.
