15 die in road crash in Egypt

The accident happened when a passenger bus collided into a truck south of Cairo

Cairo: A passenger minibus on Tuesday crashed into a truck south of Cairo, killing 15 people, security sources said.

The tragedy took place on a desert road in the province of Beni Sueif due to high speed, they added.

Initial investigations showed that the minibus, coming from the city of Assiut in Upper Egypt to Cairo, was moving at high speed when it rammed into the rear of the truck that was loaded with bricks, the sources said.

One person was also injured in the tragedy, the second in Beni Sueif in less than a month.

Fourteen people were killed and more than 40 injured late August in a collision between a passenger bus and a truck in the same province. That accident was also blamed on high speed.

Egypt has one of the world’s top road accident records mainly due to reckless driving, ill-kept vehicles and poor routes.

The government has recently toughened traffic penalties in an attempt to curb road tragedies.

Over the past three years, a large network of new roads has been built across Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous country with a population of 95 million.
