Air Transat – L-R Mr. Gilles Ringwald, Fausto Palombelli (second from R)
Thirty years have passed since the first Rome-Montreal flight of Air Transat, an airline that consolidated in a market since 1988. Over time, it has been able to consolidate itself more and more on the Italian market, reaching, on average, 90% of employment on the Italy-Canada routes.
Eighteen weekly direct flights are operated by the Canadian carrier between the two countries: the scheduled flight from Rome Fiumicino, Venice, and Lamezia Terme (Calabria) to Toronto and Montréal, can find 14 connecting flights to Vancouver, Calgary, and Québec City. From next July 10, a new frequency will be introduced on the Rome-Toronto route, increasing to 7-weekly services.
“Italy is the third European destination for Canadians,” said Gilles Ringwald, vice president of commercial Air Transat, “Compared to last year, there was an increase in capacity of 12% from Italian airports, and aircraft offer over 240,000 seats available. In addition, in 2019 we will add in the fleet the long-range A321 destined for Europe and the Caribbean. Probably, in Italy, the aircraft will be scheduled on the Venice route.”
Rome is the main airport for Air Transat: “The company has been a successful partner in connecting the Italian capital to Canada over the years,” added Fausto Palombelli, chief commercial officer of Aeroporti di Roma. “Annual average growth is recorded at Fiumicino [at] more than 3% in the last 5 years, and the investment by the Canadian carrier at the airport confirms once again the level of excellence in the services provided. By 2020, the airport will be able to accommodate more passengers; we are expanding several areas.”
“In Fiumicino, moreover, [it] was awarded the first place among the major EU airports in the liking of travelers according to the Aci surveys, [an] independent association that through direct interviews with passengers evaluates the quality of services provided by over 300 airports throughout the world,” Palombelli concluded. “E won the “World’s Most Improved Airport” and the “4 stars” from Skytrax.”
