Any groups interested in hosting a new special event or enhancing an existing event can now apply for up to $20,000.
The tourism committee and the Lake of the Woods Development Commission are accepting applications for the tourism grant until Nov. 30.
“The idea behind revising [the tourism grant] was to provide new events and provide a greater opportunity to expand,” said city tourism development officer Josh Nelson. “It just provides a better opportunity for a new event to actually get off the ground, and it’ll help those new events to be able to use this funding, if they attain it, for leverage for other funding as well.”
Before the revision, Nelson explained there was a three-tier approach to allocation that depended on the size of the event.
According to the application criteria, the events must take place within Kenora’s city limits, be held in 2018 and be open to the public at large. Priority will also be given to events that demonstrate an increase in tourist attendance, overnight stays and visitor spending, are fiscally responsible with a plan to be sustainable over the next three years, provide positive tourism exposure, have innovative strategies or activities that improve the quality of the event, have a strong economic and tourism impact, have solid budget planning and take places in the shoulder seasons of April/May or September/October, or the winter season.
Application forms are available on the City of Kenora website.
