The national government of Canada takes marine security and safety, and the well-being of most Canadians very seriously. This is why we have been taking action to raised protect marine passengers financially, their own families, and businesses in case of a marine accident.
Today, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, announced new regulations that want Canadian passenger vessel operators to transport at the least $250,000 in liability insurance for each passenger up to speed. This will make sure that all passengers and their own families receive fair compensation in case of injury or fatality in a marine accident, while protecting vessel operators against catastrophic losses and possible civil actions from passengers.

Most; however, the brand new regulations make liability insurance mandatory beneath the Marine Liability Act for passenger vessels. These new regulations align marine transportation with all the modes of transportation where mandatory insurance for passengers may be the norm.
