A person has been detained within Antwerp, Belgium, after attempting to generate his car into a busy buying street at high speed, according to law enforcement.
“ A vehicle along with French plates has tried to generate at high speed into the Meir purchasing street so that pedestrians had to leap aside, ” Antwerp police key Serge Muyters told an information conference.
“ Our own army colleagues forced the driver to prevent but he pulled away plus ran a red traffic lighting. We sent a special forces group and the car and the driver had been stopped, ” he added.
The car was intercepted with nearby port docks, according to the federal government prosecutor’ s office.
Authorities said they found kitchen knives, a gun, and a gas can having an unknown liquid in the car, Reuters reported.
“ Due to these elements, and the events in London the other day, the case is being taken on by federal prosecutor’ s office, ” the office said.
The person is of North African descent and it is believed to be a radicalized Muslim, based on the media.
He has already been identified as 39-year-old Mohamed R., the French national who resides within France, according to De Standaard.
French President Francois Hollande also said the incident seems to involve a French national.
“ It seemed to include a French national, with perhaps a certain number of weapons in his shoe – it’ s up to the idol judges to make a statement on that – who was looking to kill or at least create a dramatic incident, ” Hollande told reporters.
“ Therefore we must continue to be on higher alert and mobilize all the forces, ” he added.
A Belgian federal prosecutor also said the suspect had been French.
A edge has been set up around the area plus a bomb squad has been deployed.
Additional officers and army personnel have been deployed throughout the town, according to Antwerp police.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has praised the city’ s i9000 authorities for doing an “ excellent job. ”
It comes just one day after a good assailant plowed his car directly into pedestrians near the British Parliament, included in an attack in which a policeman was also stabbed to death.
