Concessions in travel through MSRTC approved

MUMBAI: By having an eye on the upcoming elections, the Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved a slew of concessions for different groups throughout the state putting a Rs 1800 crore burden on the already ailing Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

The yearly losses of the MSRTC ‘s almost Rs 2500 crore currently.

A nod was handed to extending the free pass facility and concessional journey facility to students, older persons and to people who have serious medical ailments. The beneficiaries will be given smart card, which may be associated with their Aadhar card.

A total of 2.18 crore beneficiaries can avail some great benefits of the concessional travel.

Free travel will undoubtedly be extended to girl students from rural areas till class 12. Currently this facility is just designed for girl students till they complete class 10.

Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said, “The quantity of rural girl students availing this scheme would now be 24 lakh as against 19.54 lakhs that were now using this facility till. This decision shall put in a burden of Rs 44 crores.”

The older persons is now able to avail 45 % concession in air conditioned Shiv Shahi buses aswell. Till date, senior were provided 50 % concession for state transport semi-luxury and buses buses.

The patients of cancer and TB will be provided 75 % concession as against 50 % given up to now. Patients of sickle-cell anemia, haemophilia can travel cost free.
