New York, The month of january 24, 2017–Kyrgyz authorities should instantly release journalist and human legal rights activist Azimjon Askarov and fall all charges against him, the particular Committee to Protect Journalists said nowadays. Kyrgyzstan’s Chui Regional Court these days upheld a September 2010 lifestyle sentence against Askarov on costs of complicity in murder plus inciting hatred for reporting upon fatal ethnic violence in 06 of that year. The journalist’s child, Sherzod Askarov, told CPJ that will Askarov would appeal the judgement and that he had gone on food cravings strike.
Askarov’s retrial started October 4, 2016, following the EL Human Rights Committee’s March 31, 2016, finding that the reporter had been arbitrarily detained, tortured, roughed up, and that he had been prevented through adequately preparing his defense. Throughout the retrial, the court dismissed a number of requests from his defense group, including that the journalist be liberated during the retrial to enable him to find medical care. Several defense witnesses informed the court they were threatened throughout the first trial, and said these people feared for their safety if they looked after Askarov again.
“We are appalled by today’s decision to uphold Azimjon Askarov’s word to life in prison, ” CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon mentioned. “Askarov should not have spent each day behind bars for reporting upon human rights violations, yet greater than six years after his unjust imprisonment, he continues to be held upon patently political charges. ”
Reuters reported today that will U. N. High Commissioner pertaining to Human Rights Prince Zeid rubbish bin Ra’ad al-Hussein called the verdict “deeply troubling” and said it was “truly unfortunate” the court had not regarded allegations that Askarov had been tortured.
Askarov is a 2012 person receiving CPJ’s International Press Freedom Prize . CPJ has advocated for their release since this individual was arrested in June the year 2010.
