Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav cooks in jail

Patna: When it comes to Lalu Prasad Yadav, you know there’s always something cooking. Even when he is in jail.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president is cooking comfort food in jail to cure his pangs of loneliness. Lalu Prasad is known to be a good cook and loves to prepare mutton on a slow flame.

He was sent to Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Central jail last week after being convicted by a special Central Bureau of Investigation court in the multi-million dollar fodder scam. The quantum of punishment will be announced on January 3.

The former chief minister is wielding a frying pan and ladle to cook green vegetables. His fans are supplying him with raw material. They continue to flock to the jail to meet their leader carrying jackfruit, spinach, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, drumstick and pulses grown without fertilizers to let him cook and enjoy good health within the four walls.

Lalu Prasad’s loyal band of men are rushing these food items to him in jail after learning that jail authorities were giving him stale vegetables. Doctors have advised the strong man of Bihar to eat green vegetables for his diabetes and heart-related issues.

On Tuesday, an RJD lawmaker Bhola Yadav went to the jail  with green vegetables. “I couldn’t meet him, but I supplied green vegetables to cook in jail,” Yadav told the media.

Lalu Prasad is a VIP prisoner and has been provided with a cook to prepare food, but on Tuesday he decided to cook himself. He made jackfruit and spinach. While he loves mutton, he has quit non-vegetarian food owing to his health complications.

His faithful also send him ‘Khaini’ (tobacco) which Lalu Prasad likes to chew to beat boredom. A special tobacco was brought from Patna upon his request. “Is khaini me dam hai (the tobacco grown in Bihar has power),” Prasad reportedly told his cooking staff. He also savours sattu (fried gram dust) and fried grains.

One of the main worries of his family is that the RJD president feels hungry often since he is a diabetic. But they need not worry now. Lalu’s faithful have the kitchen under control. Lalu Yadav is being well fed.
