Gadkari ups Mumbai's hopes for sea travel
MUMBAI: Expect more and cheaper cruising options from Mumbai soon as Union shipping minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday admitted that goods and services tax (GST) should be reduced to encourage the cruise-liners and passengers. He said his ministry would follow up on the same with the finance minister besides a proposal to relax customs norms for international and domestic cruise-liners.

“I will suggest to the Maharashtra chief minister to follow up the same with the Union finance minister,” he added.

Speaking on board ‘Angriya’ cruise he flagged off to Goa, Gadkari said his ministry would fund 50% of the cost of the the waterway project proposed between Thane and Vasai-Virar. He said his department will offer to build jetties along Mumbai’s coast for water transport.

The state has submitted a Rs 1,200 crore waterway plan of which Rs 600 crore is for Thane and Vasai-Virar, he said.
