There is A Lot going on in the trailer for Last Christmas.
Paul Feig’s first romcom — and yes, it’s holiday themed to boot — stars Game Of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke and Crazy Rich Asians‘ Henry Golding.
Counting off the tropes, we have a clumsy (but beautiful!) heroine whose life is a mess (she works as an elf in a Christmas shop and she’s not even good at it!); a meet-cute involving bird poop; our lead couple literally bumping into one another; a grim hospital backstory; a scene where Golding surprises Clarke with an ice-rink-all-to-themselves date (complete with booming lights-on noise); and at least one public carol-singing scene. Oh, and it’s “featuring the songs of George Michael.”

Not to mention the bit about how Golding’s impossibly virtuous character keeps running into Clarke but it actually “wasn’t accidental”, which has me deeply concerned that we’re dealing with some kind of Yuletide supernatural business here. If that or Clarke’s past illness has anything to do with a certain cardiac-themed line in the eponymous Wham! song, I renounce this otherwise delightful festive mess.
But then, it’s a holiday romcom featuring Michelle Yeoh giving out sage advice and Emma Thompson (who co-wrote the screenplay) doing some kind of accent, and you’re going to have at least a bottle of wine while you watch it, and as Clarke’s cynical Kate says, these are dark times. Can a manic pixie hot mess and a magic elf (?) dream boy make it work? Of course they can! It’s Christmas!
Last Christmas is in theaters in early November.
