Hotel industry increasing usage of local produce – Tourism Linkages Network

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Tourism Linkages Network says it’s been reaping success through its efforts at strengthening the partnership between your tourism and the agricultural sectors, leading to a rise in the consumption and demand of local produce by the hospitality industry.

A major thrust, which includes been bearing fruit, may be the Tourism Agri-Linkages Exchange (ALEX) pilot project, which includes assisted 400 local farmers with the marketing of 360 approximately,000 kilograms of produce valued at over $39 million, the combined group said.

ALEX, that is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Tourism and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), may be the first online platform of its kind in the national country.

It brings hoteliers in direct connection with the farmers and, subsequently, reduces leakages and retains more of the economic great things about tourism in Jamaica.

Director of the Tourism Linkages Network, Carolyn McDonald-Riley, explained that ALEX shall connect the farmer with the purchasing manager of a hotel.

“We have been aware a true amount of our farmers aren’t yet on an electric platform, therefore the agro-marketing brokers at the centre shall assist them through the procedure. So, the farmers can easily contact and indicate just how much produce they will have and the brokers will be able to wear it the website, giving the hospitality sector usage of the given information,” she explained.

The platform, that exist at agrilinkages.com, allows farmers to plan so as to adequately address crop seasonality and offer information since it pertains to geographic location of specific produce.

On, the Agri-Linkages Exchange Centre was opened at RADA’s St Andrew Parish Office, situated on Old Hope Road.

The centre will register and link more farmers with buyers in the hotel industry directly, and build out the supply side of the tourism sector.

It will enhance communication between purchasers and farmers, improve the option of market information and present farmers feedback, that will influence what they produce better.
