Warning: This story contains major spoilers for the ending of Avengers: Infinity War.
Okay, so you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War, possibly multiple times if the box office numbers are any indication. You’re still trying to suss out what’s what — not just because of that harrowing ending, but also everything else that occurs throughout the film.
Well, it seems at least one actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has tweeted out what could be seen as a pretty big spoiler. It seems to remove any doubt about the fate of the character for those that have seen the film and were left to wonder if this person would be around for Avengers 4 (and beyond) next year.
Yup, Idris just sorta… tweeted it out.
Okay, so, Heimdall’s fate isn’t exactly like that of, say, Black Panther or Spider-Man, mourned by theater-goers everywhere. Heimdall’s great, don’t get me wrong. But he’s a fairly minor character compared to others who met untimely ends in Infinity War.
So, it appears as if this confirms Heimdall won’t be back which, as our own Angie Han pointed out, isn’t a surprise, really, as it seemed his character had run its course. What’s more, his death came in the film’s opening scene — so, not exactly a major spoiler after the first 10 minutes — at the hands of Thanos who put a blade through his chest.
That’s… a pretty concrete death, even in the world of the MCU.
Side note: it’s possible, as The A.V. Club notes, that maybe Heimdall is somehow brought back for Avengers 4 and maybe Elba was just saying goodbye to his character now that shooting is done on the coming sequel. Still, I’m sticking with the original idea here: he dead.
But given Marvel and Disney’s anti-spoiler stance (looking at you, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland), who knows what trouble Elba could be in with the bosses.
