Kerala tourism department’s Ponnittassery ec…

ALAPPUZHA: The Ponnittassery eco-tourism project conceived in 2006 in Kanjikkuzhy grama panchayat promoted by the state tourism department remains a non-starter.

The construction works under this project in 2009 are on the verge of destruction. As per the project put forwarded by the then grama panchayat authorities and Ponnittassery Agricultural Library, holidaymakers will get opportunities for fishing, learning fish cooking, organic farming, boating, visiting farm land and coir industry of the panchayat.

Ponnittassery, which is village of farmers, is part of the 12th ward of the Kanjikkuzhy grama panchayat. A library – which is a centre of many rare collections of agricultural books started by a group of husbandmen of the panchayat – has been functioning for many years in Ponnittassery. The protection and development of the library were also a part of this tourism project. As part of the project a canal in Ponnittassery was also to be beautified to attract tourists and pedal boat service was to be launched.

The estimated cost of the project was Rs 20 lakh and the tourism department had allotted Rs 12 lakh for the project in 2009.
