New York, January 9, 2017–Russian government authorities should ensure the protection of Grigory Shvedov, the publisher of the independent news website Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot), and should hold responsible Magomed Daudov, the speaker associated with Chechnya’s parliament, for publicly intimidating the journalist, the Committee to shield Journalists said today.
Daudov on January 4 posted an image of a dog with its tongue linked in a knot to the social media site Instagram, using crude language in order to Shvedov to a dog in need of self-discipline. “It is past time to contact a veterinarian, ” the submit said, “to pull out [Shvedov’s] wisdom teeth and to reduce his tongue to standard dimension. Then, behold, he might even show something good and informative. inch
“We call on Russia’s central authorities to condemn Magomed Daudov’s threats against Grigory Shvedov, to ensure the editor’s safety, and to explain that threatening journalists is not appropriate, ” CPJ Europe and Main Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said. “Covering Chechnya has long been probably the most dangerous assignment for journalists within Russia, and these threats from an effective official must be taken seriously. ”
Shvedov today filed the claim against Daudov with Russia’s Investigative Committee, the federal company tasked with probing serious criminal offenses, according to Ruskies press reports . “This is really a threat to all journalists who still find it necessary to report the situation in the Chechen Republic in a professional manner, ” Shvedov informed the Russian newspaper RBK today.

This news website carries original reporting upon politics and human rights violations from a network of local correspondents, the majority of whom work under ficticious names for fear of reprisal.
