A hospital in Portsmouth has warned patients to permit extra travel time this weekend because of major closure on the M27.
The motorway will undoubtedly be shut in both directions between Junction 3 and Junction 5 from Friday night until Monday (October 1) morning.
Highways England are undertaking roadworks to displace the Romsey Road bridge and also have to close the M27 to safely do that.

Diversions will undoubtedly be in place, with westbound traffic being sent on a 60-mile detour via Salisbury.
And Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham, has issued a warning to anyone travelling in by the motorway to anticipate delays.

On Twitter, QA Hospital News wrote: ‘If you’this weekend and utilize the M27 please allow extra travelling time re visiting a healthcare facility.
‘A complete closure of the M27 is planned between Jct. 3 and Jct. 5.’
Why may be the M27 being closed?
The motorway has been closed in both directions between Junction 3 and Junction 5 while Highways England replace two bridges on the carriageway.
The current bridges are thought to be ‘struggling to move as designed&rsquo originally; and so are nearing the ultimate end of these lives – with cracks appearing in the concrete beams.
The 40-year-old bridge is nearing the ultimate end of its life and is looking for replacement.
The only safe solution to do this would be to close the motorway while this occurs. The Romsey Road Bridge is well used and carries thousands of vehicles daily.
The bridge comprises of two individual bridges actually, both will undoubtedly be closed for three full weekends as the existing bridge is demolished and a fresh one installed.
The replacement bridge includes a different design and can have a lifespan of 120 years.
When will the M27 be closed?
The weekend closures will need place the following:
– on Friday 10pm, September 28, monday to 5am, October 1 – demolition of existing west bridge
– 10pm on Friday, April 26, monday 2019 to 5am, April 29, 2019 – installing new bridge
– 10pm on Friday, October 13, 2019, to 5am Monday, October 21, 2019 – demolition of existing east bridge.
During the ongoing work, the M27 will be closed in both directions between junctions 3 and 4, and the A3057 Romsey Road on the bridge will undoubtedly be closed also.
When the A3057 reopens on Monday morning, you will have an individual lane on the bridge, which is traffic light controlled.
