Memorial Day weekend travel to be 2nd busiest in 20 years, AAA says
They are also predicting this long weekend to be the second busiest travel weekend in almost 20 years.
Gas prices may be up in the Bay Area, but according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, local gas prices have actually dropped from their peak in April. The average price of gas in the Bay Area is just over $4.

AAA says gas prices are actually about the same as they were this time last year. They say consumer spending remains strong, with families spending much of their disposable incomes on travel. But even with the recent drop in pricing, gas is still too expensive for many to even consider a holiday road trip.

“Gas prices are way too high right now. I can’t afford it. I spend enough right now just traveling back and forth to work. I work (construction) at the new Warriors stadium in San Francisco, and (the commute) takes a lot out of my pocket right now,” says Jemell Hayes, San Jose resident.
The extra traffic on Bay Area freeways won’t just be people trying to get out town. AAA expects San Francisco to be one of the top 10 destinations in the U.S. to be visited this weekend.
