Newcastle fans will have to pay and travel more than any other supporters over festive period

Newcastle United fans will have to pay more money than any other side in the Premier League to follow their side over the festive period.

Magpies fans will also clock up more miles (884) than any other side during the Christmas fixtures.

According to a study by Sporting Life, Newcastle fans will have to pay £397.80 to follow their side this month – a figure based on the shortest road distance suggested by Google Maps and HMRC’s standard rate of 45p mer mile for claiming back the cost of a car journey.

Tottenham are the second most expensive side to follow according to the study but it is still £55.80 less than following the Magpies.

By contrast, Chelsea have been gifted the most favourable set of fixtures, clocking up just 68 miles at a cost of just £30.60.

It means Newcastle fans will have to pay £367.80 more than Chelsea fans across that period.

The travel, expense and lack of consideration for away fans – particularly in regards to TV fixtures – has long been an issue Newcastle fans have been unhappy with and these figures will only serve to anger them further.

Newcastle’s away games have repeatedly been switched for TV across the last couple of seasons, with a Monday night trip to Everton last season causing particular outrage.
