YALA: Three men were arrested in this southern province yesterday after two teenagers were slashed with a knife last week.
The victims, 15-year-old Niwet Chailamya and 18-year-old Thassana Charoenkong, survived the attack, but suffered wounds to the face and shoulder respectively.
The attack occurred last Wednesday about 7.20pm, Yala police chief Pol Maj Gen Kritsada Kaeochandi said at a press conference yesterday.
He said the victims were riding a motorcycle in Yala municipality heading towards a grocery shop when three people on another motorcycle drove alongside them.
The person in the middle proceeded to slash at them with a knife, he said.
Niwet was cut across the face, while Mr Thassana sustained wounds to his right shoulder.
The suspects were later identified by Yala police as 21-year-old Zayudi Wa-ayita, who allegedly drove the motorcycle, 19-year-old Muslim Deng, who allegedly wielded the knife, and 19-year-old Bukhori Tohdeh.
Local police say surveillance footage captured the three suspects escaping from the scene of the crime.
In addition to reviewing surveillance footage, police officers had also interviewed several witnesses, Pol Maj Gen Kritsada said.
Yala police also seized a knife and motorcycle, as well as the clothes the victims had worn at the crime scene. It was not reveal where the three were arrested or the motive behind the attack.
Pol Maj Gen Kritsada said the seized items will be used as evidence for investigators to determine what criminal charges to bring.
“If the three suspects are charged with attempted murder, they could face jail terms of more than 15 years,” Pol Maj Gen Kritsada added.
