Look, nobody seems to really know what happened between Donald Trump and recently-former national security adviser John Bolton — not even the TV hosts who were getting texts from Bolton himself live on air, contradicting Trump’s tweets claiming Bolton was fired. But Seth Meyers does his best in Wednesday night’s A Closer Look segment.
After touching on Trump’s “scary stories” about refugees from Hurricane Dorian’s swathe of destruction in the Bahamas (“He should hold his rallies in the dark, holding a flashlight under his face — he’s like a racist Stephen King”), Meyers gets into the really terrifying stuff about John Bolton.
Because, the Late Night host explains, the former Fox pundit is “an unrepentant warmonger” who has been described as a guy who “wants to bomb everyone,” picked by Trump because he appeared on the president’s favourite news channel. Meyers then sums up the whole shemozzle with the help of some clumsy sports mascots.
“It’s just as terrifying to imagine who Trump might hire next,” Meyers says, as a series of corporate-sponsored furries spectacularly wipe out during trampoline-assisted slam dunk attempts over his right shoulder. “If all he does is hire people he sees on TV, he might as well go ahead and pick this guy.”
