TAKING THEIR SEATS: Students from the Goldendale Middle School met with Rep. Gina Mosbrucker in Olympia for a tour of the capitol.

Goldendale Middle School students toured the state capitol in Olympia Nov. 30 with their teacher, Stephanie Garner, as part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) elective program. The trip was funded by the Gear Up grant which is developing the AVID program at GMS. At the capitol, students were given a personal “insiders” tour by Rep. Gina Mosbrucker, which allowed them to experience the seat of government in more depth than a standard tour.

As part of the trip, the middle school students also toured a college campus, because the focus of the Gear Up grant is preparation for college as an option. AVID focuses on building skills for success in school now and later. These skills are strengthened in the middles school’s AVID intervention sessions, and developed in depth in the AVID elective class.
