The “twin towns” were recently listed by Thrillist Travel as one of “America’s 20 Greatest Summertime Lake Towns” for 2018.
Meanwhile, Oval Beach is in the running for the readers’ choice top beach in America in 10 Best annual contest. Voting ends Monday, May 28.
“These are places where you can dial up the laughs or hold onto pure chill in your own perfect proportion,” the digital media company said of its list. “After combing the land, we’ve come up with our favorites.”
Thrillist ranked the Michigan towns third on its list of 20 American lake towns, stating that although Saugatuck and Douglas are technically two separate cites, they’re “essentially two sides of the same coin.”
“After you hit the shore and soak up some sun on the renowned Oval Beach, hike through Mount Baldhead Park or maybe do a little charter fishing on Lake Michigan,” Thrillist suggested.
Saugatuck City Manager Kirk Harrier said Oval Beach is a big draw for Michiganders and tourists alike as a very pristine and natural setting.
“When you’re at Oval Beach, you feel like you’re a million miles away from civilization,” Harrier said. “It’s a really unique set up and I think that is why Oval Beach, and the small-town charm of Saugatuck, continues to bring people in and is recognized in the travel industry on a regular basis.”
The website lists Saugatuck’s Sand Bar as a great drinking destination, and Bowdies Chop House as the go-to for “some choice eats.”
The post also cites Saugutuck and Douglas as “gay-friendly destinations,” with 140 businesses listed in the 14th Annual LGBTQ Saugatuck/Douglas Guide that are LGBTQ-owned or welcoming to the community.
