Saint Lucia’s tourism industry will benefit from infrastructural refurbishments aimed at enhancing the visitor experience.
During the opening of the fifth Saint Lucia – North America Showcase, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Tourism, Information and Broadcasting, Hon Dominic Fedee, said plans to expand the Hewanorra International Airport are at an advanced stage.
“We realize that the capacity of the airport at peak times has been a chronic problem, and we realize that we have to focus on the implementation of this particular policy so that we can have an improved facility,” he said. “We have already received financing and we are in the design phase which we will convey to all stakeholders so that we have the best expansion plan for the airport.”
Minister Fedee revealed the airport expansion is part of a larger tourism strategic plan and involves upgrading the road network from the south to the north of the island.
“The plan by government is to reduce the amount of travel time from the south. This has been a longstanding policy discussion and we are hoping for quicker and faster implementation as it pertains to that much needed infrastructure, so that we can get customers up to the north faster and more comfortably.”
Minister Fedee believes a stakeholder-driven approach to shaping policies for the tourism sector will better serve the island’s tourism product.
