fastjet chief executive Nico Bezuidenhout says that the airline has been “pursuing this route designation for several years”.

“We are delighted to see that positive changes in the Zimbabwean environment made this development possible, enabling low-fare connectivity between more domestic destinations,” he adds.

Bezuidenhout believes that fastjet’s route connecting Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, will contribute to economic activity and growth in a hub that services nearby mining, industrial and agricultural activity.

In October 2018, fastjet will celebrate its third year of operating in Zimbabwe and Bezuidenhout says the carrier “has invested substantially in the market with positive outcomes. While we are launching with a single frequency at present, fastjet intends to further grow the route following further consultation with stakeholders and ultimately to introduce additional aircraft to facilitate growth.”

The airline, which currently flies between Harare and Johannesburg 4 times daily, says it will be the first low-cost airline to operate the Harare to Bulawayo route. It operates a route connecting Harare and Victoria Falls twice daily, and up to 3 times a week between Victoria Falls and Johannesburg.

It also recently announced that it is making plans to launch domestic flights in South Africa by 2019.
