Mar 08, Colombo: The UK government has updated the travel advice on Sri Lanka as the tense situation in Kandy administrative district, a major tourist area in the central hill country, is improving following a number of violent incidents.

Updating the travel advice, the UK Foreign Office (FCO) said that there are no reports that major tourist areas elsewhere in Sri Lanka have been affected, and Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo is operating as normal. Recommendation by Sri Lanka Tourism for tourists not to travel into Kandy, has been lifted.

“On 7 March, a curfew was imposed in the Kandy administrative region following a number of violent incidents. The curfew was lifted on the morning of 8 March, but is expected to be re-imposed at 6pm local time. Trains to and from Kandy are understood to be operating normally, but there may be some disruption to local travel. Certain social media sites and messaging platforms have been blocked or restricted nationwide,” FCO advisory said.

However, FCO advised UK travelers to exercise caution, avoid protests and rallies, comply with local security requirements and follow the advice of the local authorities and consult the Sri Lankan Tourism Development Authority website , which has issued regular updates on the impact on tourist travel in the area.
