New York, February almost eight, 2017–Ukrainian investigators’ announcement today they consider Pavel Sheremet’s journalism because the most likely motive in his July 2016 murder is a welcome step towards bringing his killers to proper rights, the Committee to Protect Journalists stated today. Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov informed journalists in Kiev that police believe Sheremet, exactly who wrote for the independent news web site Ukrayinska Pravda , was slain in retaliation for his function.
“We hope that Ukrainian authorities’ identification of Pavel Sheremet’s journalism as the motive for their murder will swiftly lead them to their killers, ” said CPJ European countries and Central Asia Program Planner Nina Ognianova. “Ukrainian officials need to take this opportunity to show that media cannot be killed with impunity. inch
Avakov told journalists that police believe Sheremet’s murderers were hired. Sheremet, 44, passed away in Kiev on July twenty after an explosive device detonated under the car he was generating.
CPJ honored Sheremet with its International Press Freedom Prize in 1998.
