SONGKHLA — A major drug suspect wanted under a warrant has been arrested and his assets seized in Hat Yai district, police said.
The arrest of Songklod “Dieo” Kaewsompong, 34, was made on Saturday in a raid on his house in Urbana Housing Estate on the road to Hat Yat airport in Khuan Lang Municipality of Hat Yai.
Mr Songklod was wanted under a warrant approved by the Chiang Rai Provincial Court on Sept 22, 2016 for having a quantity of methamphetamine pills and crystal methamphetamine or ice in possession with intent to sell.
The police, led by Hat Yai police chif Pol Col Kittisak Sangkhathaworn, did not find any drugs or illegal items in the search.
However, the authorities seized his house, worth about 5 million baht, a Mercedes Benz, a Toyota Camry and one four-door Isuzu pick-up truck for examination as the assets were suspected to have been acquired through the drug trade.
Mr Songklod is on a police record as a major drug dealer of Songkhla and the country. He escaped an arrest in the seizure of over one million methamphetamine pills and a quantity of ice in a police action in Chiang Rai’s Mae Chan district on July 14, 2016.
The police learned from an investigation that Mr Songklod had bought a house at the Urbana Housing Estate in Hat Yai and opened a land reclamation company as a front for the drug trade.
He had ordered a large quantity of methamphetamine pills at a time from the North for distribution in the South.
Six years ago, he was arrested on drug charges and served three years in jail. He continued with the drug trade after being released.
In the police questioning, Mr Songklod said he had acted only as a go-between for drug networks.
