SURAT THANI – Arrest warrants have been approved for nine soldiers and a summons for another in connection with the fatal beating of a conscript in Surat Thani.
The 45th Military Circle Court approved on Wednesday the warrants and the summons on the charge of collaborating in a fatal assault. Pvt Yutthakinun Boonniam, attached to the 45th Military Circle, was attacked last week while being detained for disciplinary offences at a military prison at Vibhavadi Rangsit military camp. He died on Saturday.
Four of the arrest warrants were for active non-commissioned officers: SM1 Yanyong Samleemuang; PO1 Sanong Kamseeta, PO1 Chalermpong Nilsuwan and PO1 Poramate Temyod. The rest were for conscripts: Pvt Sakravut Polarat, Pvt Chakrapan Kieosawat, Pvt Pakpoom Suebmas, Pvt Puvadej Tarayuttapoom and Pvt Sitthichai Pobyod.
Sgt Surachet Prommas, the duty officer at the jail, faced only the summons as the court viewed he had a permanent address and is not inclined to interfere with witnesses and evidence.
The nine suspects are being held at the jail.
Maj Gen Vichai Tassanamontien, commander of the Circle, said a panel set up to probe into the case had found five of the suspects took the physical action while the rest knew but did not stop it.
