ARC: US Travel Agents Sold $9 Billion Worth of Air Tickets in May 2024

In May 2024, US travel agencies saw a total of $9 billion in air ticket sales, as reported by the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC). This represented a 1% decrease compared to the previous month. The number of passenger trips reached 25.7 million, with a notable 10% increase in US domestic trips and a 2% increase in international trips.

Total revenue has not exceeded $9 billion for three straight months since 2019, indicating the ongoing resilience of air travel in 2024, according to ARC’s chief commercial officer. Additionally, travelers are benefiting from airfare prices that have remained relatively stable compared to last year, despite inflationary pressures in other sectors of the economy.

Ancillary sales experienced a 17% year-over-year increase to $31 million, with ancillary transactions rising by 59% to 564,619 during the same timeframe.

The data presented in the findings are derived from the monthly sales records up until May 31, 2024. These records encompass a total of 10,351 retail and corporate travel agency locations in the United States, along with satellite ticket printing offices and online travel agencies. It is important to note that the results exclude ticket sales made directly from airlines. The average ticket price, denominated in USD, pertains specifically to round-trip tickets settled through ARC, and the itineraries considered solely involve domestic travel within the United States.
