United Airlines now sends customers links to local, live radar maps via text messages during weather delays, as part of its ongoing efforts to provide travelers with up-to-date information about their trip, particularly in case of unexpected disruptions. Over the recent years, the airline has employed specialized teams to compose and dispatch text messages to passengers, offering immediate updates on various aspects of a flight such as gate modifications, boarding schedules, as well as more detailed information on aircraft changes, crew rearrangements, and weather conditions. These teams have now incorporated generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) tools to enhance the provision of real-time updates to a larger number of travelers during flight delays.
United Airlines has introduced a groundbreaking feature – live radar maps – to assist passengers in comprehending the effects of severe weather in one region on flights in another. United Airlines is also the sole US carrier offering such detailed updates to its customers, utilizing gen AI tools to deliver these messages. This introduction of new technologies coincides with United’s anticipation of its busiest Fourth of July weekend ever, with over five million passengers expected to fly between June 28 and July 8, marking a 7% increase from the previous year.
