WestJet has announced the acquisition of the initial batch of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) provided in Canada by Shell Aviation. This significant development underscores WestJet’s commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and signifies a positive advancement towards enhancing the sustainability of Canada’s aviation sector.
With a conducive regulatory and investment landscape, SAF stands out as a highly feasible and expandable option within the sector for emission reduction by 2050. It holds the promise of cutting lifecycle emissions by as much as 80 percent when used in its pure form, as opposed to traditional aviation fuel. WestJet is dedicated to collaborating with governmental and industrial allies to develop a sustainable, enduring business model for SAF. The SAF sourced from Shell Aviation is mixed with regular jet fuel to satisfy all certification and safety standards, without necessitating any fresh investments in aircraft engines, fuel infrastructure, or distribution procedures.
