The Hotel Maria, located in Helsinki, Finland, announced its recent induction into Historic Hotels Worldwide, a distinguished global network of renowned upper-upscale and luxury historic accommodations. This organization advocates for heritage and cultural tourism, featuring historic hotels and lodgings that date back over ten centuries across 47 countries worldwide.
Historic Hotels Worldwide operates alongside Historic Hotels of America, which is the official initiative of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States, dedicated to honoring and promoting historic hotels.
Membership in Historic Hotels Worldwide is reserved for a select group of hotels, resorts, and inns situated at historic sites that are a minimum of 75 years old and provide accommodations steeped in history.
While the collection is varied, each member must meet one or more of the following criteria: it was once the residence of notable individuals, or it is situated on the grounds of such a residence; it is a site of historical significance related to a notable event; it is located in or near a historic district, a significant landmark, a site of a historical event, or a historic city center; it has received recognition from a local preservation organization or a national trust; and it showcases historic memorabilia, artwork, photography, or other artifacts that highlight its historical importance.
