Major Travel Disruptions Expected in Northeast USA

Severe thunderstorms with damaging 60-70 mph wind gusts, as well as hail, downpours, and isolated tornadoes are possible from North Carolina through New England in the United States through Thursday night.

Due to this weather, major travel delays and disruptions are expected on highways and at airports across the Northeast along the highly-populated Interstate 95 corridor from Washington, DC, to New York City through Thursday evening as severe thunderstorms rumble through the region.

The same setup that brought nearly 300 wind damage incidents and a dozen reports of tornadoes across the Midwest on Wednesday will shift toward the Atlantic Seaboard from Quebec to the Carolinas through Thursday night.

High humidity levels combined with a ripple in the jet stream will unleash one or more lines of thunderstorms that will progress from the Appalachians and Piedmont areas toward the Atlantic coast.

AccuWeather expert meteorologists say a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms on Thursday extends from Raleigh, North Carolina, through Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Albany, New York.

Drivers should be prepared for the risk of urban flooding, high water and sudden poor visibility as the storms approach. Roads that tend to flood during downpours should be avoided. Due to the saturated ground in some areas, strong wind gusts during storms can easily push over trees or break off rotting limbs, leading to power outages.

Expert meteorologists say there will be an elevated risk of tornadoes in an area from upstate New York and northwestern New England to parts of central and eastern Quebec. This includes the major Canadian metro areas of Quebec City and Montreal, as well as Burlington, Vermont; Albany, New York; Pittsfield, Massachusetts; and Lebanon, New Hampshire; in the northeastern US.

As a massive dome of heat builds from this weekend to next week with dangerous triple-digit temperatures and sweltering humidity, rounds of severe thunderstorms will erupt on the northern edge from the Midwest to parts of the Northeast.

Forecast temperatures indicate soaring 5 to 15 degrees above the historical average across the Northeast starting Monday through Wednesday.
