Zambia's Mfuwe Airport Remains Open for South Luangwa National Park Visitors

The Mfuwe International Airport, serving as the main entry point to South Luangwa National Park, will continue to operate without interruption in 2024, despite initial plans to shut down the runway for a portion of the upcoming summer. This decision ensures that visitors have uninterrupted access to the park and the wildlife attractions in the Luangwa Valley. Starting on June 13th, 2024, the airport will undergo essential upgrades and enhancements over a period of 90 days, all while maintaining full functionality during Zambia’s busiest tourism season.

Zambia Airports Corporation, in collaboration with the government, has taken steps to avoid any interruptions by rescinding the decision to shut down Mfuwe International Airport this summer. It is crucial for the airport to stay open throughout the peak season, allowing us to highlight the exceptional game viewing opportunities in South Luangwa and the Luangwa Valley during the summer.

Mfuwe International Airport, located in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, is just a 70-minute flight away from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. The ongoing enhancement of the airport’s infrastructure will play a vital role in sustaining the growth of tourism in Zambia.
